This project was made successful by Bain-Waring Builders thanks to a well executed plan. Having built high-performance homes before, Bain-Waring Builders made sure to start discussing all of the building performance goals early on in the process with the home owner. Every aspect of the building envelope was considered as to what impact it would have in regards to performance and cost. The project boast several key aspects that helped it achieve high efficiency goals. It has a conditioned crawl space to help house some of the mechanical equipment and promote healthy indoor air quality. The mechanical equipment was very efficient including a 17 SEER heat pump and a tankless water heater. The walls and roof of the building envelope were comprised of spray foam as well as continuous R-3 on the above grade walls. The well sealed envelope and duct work generated very low blower door and duct tightness testing results. The efficient lighting and appliances also helped with the overall efficiency of the project. Finally, the more than 5.5 kW of solar assisted the project in achieving net zero energy utilization over the course of the first year of occupancy. The project achieved both EarthCraft House and ENERGY STAR v3 certifications.
